CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

I entered the lounge on the deck and everyone stopped talking. Milla and Carmen lingered by the bar and grinned. Lex and Ian sat near the dining area playing cards.

“Why are you guys staring at me?”

“No reason,” Lex called. “Hope you had a nice rest.”

I narrowed my eyes as Ian winked and grinned. I shrugged my shoulders and moved toward the bar.

“You’re late for dinner. We’ve been waiting on you.” Carmen approached me with a drink. “Also, you were very vociferous in dealing with a personal matter of yours.”

My cheeks heated. I’d shouted at the top of my lungs that I belonged to Max. I bit my lip and glanced at Lex and Ian, who’d resumed their game.

“Why the hell did I buy a ship with the fucking lounge near the owner’s suite?” I muttered.

“Speaking of fucking.” Carmen cocked her head at welts on my wrists and raised an eyebrow. “Handcuffs?”

I instinctively rubbed them and shrugged. Now, I was confident everyone in the lounge heard everything we’d said. “It was rude of you to listen.” I mumbled.

“We could hear your orgasm on the other end of the yacht.”

I frowned and glared at her.

Laughing, Carmen sipped her drink. “I hope all the rough monkey sex you and my grumpy-ass brother had has put him in a better mood. I don’t think I can deal with any more meetings where he spends most of the time chewing our heads off.”

At that moment, Max entered the room. He regarded me with both aggravation and ambivalence. He shook his head as he glanced at my wrist then dismissed me and turned to Ian, who approached him. They shook hands and strolled out to the balcony.

“I guess that answers my question. I’m not sure if things are worse or better with you two.”

“Definitely worse. Every time I think we’re taking one step forward, I do something that sends us back ten.” I covered my eyes with my hands.

“You and me both. Here, drink this.”

I grabbed the cocktail and swallowed it down in a few gulps. The sharp vermouth burned down my throat and heated my belly. “Thanks, I needed that.”

“You’re welcome.”

“Mil is right. Maybe I’m not cut out for this no-strings thing.”

“I heard my name. What am I missing?” Milla approached us and looped her arms between Carmen’s and mine.

“Only that the all-knowing sage Milla of the island of Castra’s predictions are coming true. Among them being: Arya sucks at affairs, makes stupid choices in them, and by trying to protect herself she hurts the man she’s with.”

Milla sighed. “Well, ladies, the three of us are a match made in fucked-up-relationship hell.”

“That’s the understatement of the year,” I mumbled. “Girls, I’m sorry about before. I’ll think about what you said, okay?”

“We’re here for you, even when you don’t want to listen.” Milla leaned her head against mine. “I’ve waited for this reunion. I’m glad the musketeers are back in action.”

“Me too,” Carmen and I said in unison and giggled.

“Ms. Rey, dinner is served,” my chef announced from the archway of the dining room.
